  1. verse 42, "Jonathan said to David, 'Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord,..."

Close friends - the best of friends - a sworn friendship. David and Jonathan were very close friends. They knew that they could count on each other. Both were willing to sacrifice for the other.

We all need this kind of friendship. We need to know that there is always going to be someone that has our back. For me, there is not much worse than someone who calls themselves my friend and then talks behind my back. That would never happen between Jonathan and David. I think they would give up their lives before they ever allowed anything negative to hurt the other one.

I must be absolutely certain that I am standing up for my friends. I must encourage and defend. I must be willing to sacrifice on their behalf. I love my friends and I must display that love with my actions and my words even when they aren't around.

  2. V. 12-13, "Then Jonathan said to David: "By the LORD, the God of Israel, I will surely sound out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know? But if my father is inclined to harm you, may the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I do not let you know and send you away safely."

It would have been easy for Jonathan to take the easy route and deny to himself that his father was capable of jealous murder. But he believed in his friend and tested his father, then chose to do what was right.

Many people could not choose between friendship and family loyalty. Most would try to play both sides of the fence, choosing not to back one side or the other. Jonathan was true to himself, his values, and his word.

It's this kind of friend I try so hard to be, and I seek out people like this to befriend. Sadly, they're few and far between.

  3. V42 Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.

This is what it is all about, christian friendships that hold us accountable. We need to know we have friends that share our fait and are not afraid to call us out. Holding us true to our values of faith and family. True friends do that, whether we like it or not.
